High Ceilings (My 70's school gym), 2015, oil on canvas, 76 x 85 inches / 193 x 216 cm
It's not often that a painting comes about based on an actual dream, but in this case it did. I was back in my childhood's gym class, remembering the monkey bars we were asked to climb, and the ropes you would burn your hands on sliding down way too fast, no longer being able to hold yourself up. As a kid, I remember thinking that there had be more to life than doing exercises like this for the sake of, I guess, teaching discipline and how to follow direction. In this painting, outside of the window is a world full of lush nature, mystery and fantasy seeping through the walls - along with an unfathomed belief in life ahead, regardless of gym class.
