Zoo Beginnings, 2014, ink wash and gouache on paper, 12 in. dia. / 30 cm dia
As a kid I didn't think much about the captivity of the zoo animals. Visiting the giraffes and getting an ice cream was fun. Today, I have a hard time with seeing animals in cages. Copenhagen Zoo was in the news due to the controversial feeding of the euthanized young giraffe "Marius" to the other zoo animals. It got me to think about the founder of the Zoo - would he have approved of this? Probably not. He was an ornithologist and the zoo's beginning was the display of various birds. I decided to go back in time and give the animals wings to fly with, to set them loose.
