I am a Danish painter living and working in Los Angeles, but I was born and raised in a small town called Nivå, just north of Copenhagen in Denmark.
My dad was a cartoonist and growing up in a family of dreamers, imagination was a natural way of communicating between us. I took it for granted then, but have since discovered that our dinner table conversations of riffing and making up stories were not the norm.
What this dynamic lacked in real-life preparedness; it made up plenty for in becoming the artist I am today.
I received a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, and also studied a semester at École nationale supérieure des beaux arts in Paris. This training defined my purpose early on, but the real work is every day as a new blank canvas asks of you to forget everything you know and to keep growing.
INSPIRATION
Inspired by images found in her family's photo album, or from photos she takes as well as journal sketches of life around her; Trine Churchill creates paintings between the lines of realism and dream and memory.
TECHNIQUES
Trine Churchill paints in both acrylic and oil on canvas, and her journal drawings are oftentimes done in watercolor or ink. She combines her imagery with use of realism as well as applying a loose handling of the paint, layering it in more abstract ways.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions with Castelli Art Space, Los Angeles, Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York, and Hübner + Hübner Galerie in Frankfurt.
